Just the Beginning

Updated: Apr 29, 2023

Hi y’all! I am a senior at The University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) and graduate this May! It’s crazy how fast the past three years have passed. I am a communication major and earning a public relations certificate. I started college in August 2020 during COVID-19, which seems like just yesterday, and now I’m graduating after experiencing a booming campus and learning so much to help me in my future career. I have had the honor to intern for The Barnett Agency here at UMSL for the past 1 ½ years. Throughout this internship, I had the amazing opportunity to run UMSL’s Department of Communication and Media’s social media sites. I have connected and interacted with many students, professors, and staff. I gained real world social media management and public relations experience. This internship allowed me to find my place at UMSL and really feel like I belonged. I loved every second of it and am very thankful for Prof. Alexander’s https://tinyurl.com/58br6j55. leadership and guidance. If you are earning a Public Relations Certificate, don’t hesitate to reach out to her! Upon graduation I hope to obtain a job within human resources or social media management. I am currently job searching and gaining very good interview experience. I encourage any communication student reading this to organize and save any writing piece that can serve as portfolio pieces. A lot of companies will ask for writing samples, so saving samples that you like and did well on in class will make applying for jobs easier and a little less stressful! Best college decisions I made:

  • Adopting a dog.

  • Living at home to save money.

  • Color coding all my classes in a planner.

  • Taking American Sign Language – met amazing people and got to experience campus.

  • Remembering how lucky I am to get to further my education.

Things I would do differently:

  • Get more connected on campus – it can be hard as commuter student, but so worth it!

  • Take more on campus courses.

  • Join a student group or recreational sports team to meet more people.

I am extremely grateful for my college journey and am most excited to start my career and see my future unfold. UMSL has prepared me to start this next chapter of my life and I am so ready to see what’s in store for me next. Congratulations to all the other May 2023 graduate students, and to the current students, you’ve got this!
